My move to Colorado wasn’t easy, but it was worth it.
April 12, 2021, I made my first trip moving horses to Colorado. My friend Wendy, who had been living in Colorado for three years, committed to making the drive from Washington to Colorado with me and my two horses. It was bittersweet. My husband and I had lived in our home in Washington for over 36 years. However, after living near the ocean for all my life, it was time for a new adventure. It was time for life in the mountains!
The journey had begun! Two weeks later, I was back with my truck and borrowed a trailer to pick up the rest of the farm, tractor, and move the rest of our home to Colorado. It took four pickups, a cargo trailer, horse trailer, flatbed trailer, and 26-foot Penske truck. Quite a caravan! We sold quite a bit of equipment—a round pen, horse shelter, cart, and loads of things—just to finance the trip. It was a 1,500-mile undertaking I probably won’t do again.
Living my dream of moving to Colorado began years ago at an American Horse Publications convention in Colorado Springs. I loved the mountains and the red rock formations. Daily sunshine was a must after living in the Pacific Northwest all my life. Change is good but often very hard. Making the decision is even harder. All this to say that anyone can live their dream if determined enough to do what it takes.
Were there challenges? Absolutely! But through these challenges we become alive and stronger to take on the next! While I had some heartbreaking things happen, like losing my horse April, I have met some of the nicest horse people in the industry. I’m fortunate to have a great team that has stuck with me for years and two new team members I absolutely love! Check out our “About us Page” on ColoradoHorseSource.com, and meet the people behind the brand.
This month we have a nice lineup of articles. We have a great cover story on page six from the Mustang Heritage Foundation, and a must-read article on fire safety in the barn from Rod Kazenske and more. Thanks again for joining our group of readers and viewers! Have a great fall season, and enjoy your horses!

Owner/Publisher Karen’s lifelong love of horses began at a very early age when she wore out a couple of rocking horses before convincing her parents to get her the real thing. That ill-tempered bay gelding, Brandy, was a challenge for the young horsewoman, but it drove her ambition to become a horse trainer. After attending Canyonview Equestrian College’s Horsemanship Program, Karen realized she needed work that was a little more lucrative than training, so she took a job with Customs Brokerage to pay the bills. There, she discovered an affinity for computers and a talent for creating informative, entertaining newsletters. The Northwest Horse Source began as such a letter in December 1995, with a distribution of 1000 copies for its 12 black and white pages. Now 25 years later, it’s an online magazine and website with a reach of over 10,000 per month and growing! Not bad for the results of one woman’s dream to work with horses!
Today, Karen remains involved with every aspect of the magazine and treasures the community of thousands who share a common passion. Now excited to start a version of her original magazine in Colorado!
