[Longmont, Colorado] – February 4, 2026 – Colorado Horse Rescue (CHR) has launched Compassionate Endings, a new program designed to ensure horses receive kindness and peace in their final moments, regardless of an owner’s financial circumstances.
“Saying goodbye to a horse is one of the most difficult decisions an owner can face,” said Katherine Gregory, Chief Executive Officer of Colorado Horse Rescue. “Horses are deeply sensitive animals and transporting them or placing them in unfamiliar environments at the end of life can cause unnecessary stress. Compassionate Endings prioritizes at-home euthanasia, allowing horses to pass peacefully in a familiar setting,” Gregory added.
When cost is a barrier, CHR can help by:
- Covering humane euthanasia performed by a licensed veterinarian
- Paying for body retrieval through a professional transportation service
- Providing referrals to trusted veterinary partners, if needed
Compassionate Endings is not limited to horses adopted through CHR. The program is available to any horse in need, regardless of age, breed, background, or adoption history. Owners are encouraged to consult their veterinarian and consider quality-of-life indicators, including nutrition, health, behavior, and mental well-being, when making end-of-life decisions.
“Choosing a gentle goodbye is not just an option, it’s a responsibility that comes with loving them,” said Rachel Corbman, Equine Care Director of Colorado Horse Rescue. “Compassionate Endings was created to ensure that compassion, not financial hardship, guides end-of life decisions.”
Those seeking support can confidentially email [email protected]. A CHR team member will connect with them to discuss their horse’s situation and next steps.
