Eliana Hummell’s horse interests run the gamut from liberty to drill team.
What is your name and age?
Eliana Hummell. I am 13.
How long have you been involved with horses?
Three years. I started at a ranch mucking out pastures, then leasing horses, and then bought my own.
Do you have an instructor or trainer?
No
What’s the hardest part about owning or caring for horses?
Making sure they get enough time with you and feeding them in the bitter cold and making sure their water isn’t frozen.
What kind of riding do you do?
I ride more Western. I’m on the Blazing Saddles Drill Team, and I teach lessons on my horse, Miracle. I also like to ride English in my spare time.
Tell us about your horse.
My horse’s name is Miracle. She’s a 14.3 hh Quarter Horse/Arabian mare and is 6 years old. I bought her in May 2021.
What are your horse riding and training goals?
My biggest goal right now is to get her to have better ground manners. I also would want to try liberty training with her. I think that would help with respect since she’s a little pushier than I would like.
Any accomplishments you’re especially proud of?
Before I bought my horse, I wanted to teach lessons, and I currently have several students, so I reached that goal. Miracle used to try to buck every time I’d ask for a canter. Eventually, as I put more miles under her feet, she got over that.
What are some obstacles/challenges you’ve had to overcome with your horse training or riding?
Miracle went through a period of not wanting to load in the trailer. I practiced every day with her, and eventually it got better and now she walks in without me leading her.
Name one or two of your heroes in the horse world—people you admire and respect. Why did you choose this person?
Jessica Rae Springsteen (notable equestrian and singer Bruce Springsteen’s daughter). I admire her for her perseverance.
What’s your dream career? Do you see horses in your adult life?
I’d like to open my own horse training/boarding facility.
